Brown Sugar, Durham

17 July 2006

Brown Sugar is very brown and very sweet. This is what it feels like to be inside in a box of chocolates; just don’t eat the chairs.

Update, 2013: we understand Brown Sugar has closed.

Talking of chairs, the best are the giant caramel-coloured leather ones.

Brown Sugar has been designed with precision and is fairly swish, with a plush interior and plasma TV screens. So it is not (I presume) the brainchild of an independent café owner, but it doesn’t lack character.

It’s a great place to sip a coffee in peace, harmony, and a temperate climate (thanks to the air conditioning). It doubles up as a student bar in the evenings.

With lovely Durham just beyond the huge glass windows, what more could you want?

Definitely very cosy, but the service is often ice-age inducingly slow!

Very nice looking, stylish and cosy.
Coffee, Cocktails and service are absolutly awful. to the point its amusing.
if youre laidback, in no hurry and dont care about paying the usual price for unusually bad Brown Sugar is good.

Brown Sugar may have closed, but I’m surprised you don’t list Flat White (on Elvet Bridge in Durham). Their coffee is fantastic and they make a whole load of good cakes and sandwiches as well.

Thanks David, Flat White is on our hit list. Hopefully we’ll have a chance to visit soon.
