At the time of our visit, Hoxton North had been open just a few weeks, but already had the feel of a well established coffee haunt.
Husband-and-wife team Timothy and Vicky Bosworth spent much of the last 10 years in London. Looking for a change of pace (faster or slower, I’m not sure), they returned to their home county of Yorkshire to set up a coffee shop.
Hoxton North, named after the east London district of Hoxton, is a slice of cool London-inspired coffee in prim and proper Harrogate.
If that feels a little incongruous, it isn’t. Hoxton North fits perfectly into its surroundings, thanks in part to the sympathetic use of the fabulous Grade II listed building. Original features and furniture remain, with tasteful additions. Check out Timothy’s interesting video diaries on YouTube for insight into the refurbishment.
There is a fabulous mirror-encased snug hidden away at the side of the shop, cosy seats by the window, bar stools and tables. The decor is a comforting mix of modern and traditional. Vicky and Tim rightly resisted a move towards the typical ‘industrial’ look so often favoured by new speciality coffee shops (not a bad look, it just wouldn’t have worked in this case).
Vicky and Timothy are working hard on the coffee, which, after just a few weeks, was already delicious, if not perfectly presented. Though neither Vicky nor Tim is a barista by trade (Vicky was in marketing, Tim was/is an entrepreneur), I would not expect to return without awarding Cosy Coffee Shops’ coveted ‘top notch for coffee’ status – things are progressing this quickly.
There is a range of options and brew methods, with beans coming from Origin and other roasteries such as Workshop. We had a flat white, a drip brew and a few things in between. I’d say it’s already the best coffee in Harrogate.
Thanks mainly to the personality of the owners, Hoxton North already seems to have garnered a loyal following. During our three or so hours by the window, Vicky and Tim struck up dozens of conversations with locals on a first name basis – not that we were eavesdropping.
Vicky and Tim have landed on their feet. Hoxton North is a wonderful coffee shop with great coffee, fab people and a lovely setting.
All this after trading for just a few short weeks. It’s bound to get even better.
