http://nebraskaturfgrass.com/forum/ Owners Dave and Alison Cunliffe have been readers of Cosy Coffee Shops for years, and their place, New England Coffee House, has been recommended by readers. Coffee shop karma.
On our way back to York from the south west, we made a last-minute detour to Stow on the Wold. We’re delighted we did. It was our first visit to this beautiful town, which boasts a super coffee shop.
In some ways, New England Coffee House is what Cosy Coffee Shops is all about, or at least what inspired us to start this website all those years ago. It’s a proper independent, owner-managed coffee shop. A hub for locals, with friendly baristas, comfy chairs, characterful surroundings and decent coffee.
We were humbled and overjoyed when owner Dave told us that Cosy Coffee Shops was part of what inspired him to open his own coffee shop. That’s a first for us.
Dave gave us the tour, including the soon-to-be roastery on the top floor. Lugging bags of unroasted coffee beans up those ancient rickety stairs sounds like a nightmare – I wonder if he will still be enthused by the project after a few months of back-breaking lifting. At least Stow will be steeped in the beautiful scent of freshly-roasted coffee, drifting around the rooftops.
That’s to come, but in the here and now, New England Coffee House is a fabulously cosy place.
Having come straight from Colonna & Smalls in Bath, our coffee didn’t quite compare – but Dave is passionate about it, and putting a lot of effort into the new roastery. They’re also keen on local produce, including milk from a nearby dairy.
We love these sorts of surroundings, which are all too rare these days. Each room is a little different, with a real mismatch of furniture. The building is grade 2 listed, built in 1670.
The wonky stairs and sloping ceilings reminded us of Coffee Culture in York and Dave told us that, in fact, Coffee Culture was a big inspiration.
Dave and Alison’s enthusiasm and dedication has paid off. New England Coffee House is a charming place and well worth a visit.
